CIVIC BEAUTIFICATION
HIGH BRIDGE EMERGENCY SQUAD BUILDING
The largest project of the Hunterdon Hills Garden Club involves the planting and maintenance of the perennial garden and planters at the High Bridge Emergency Squad building. The perennial garden is maintained throughout the year including one (1) week shifts in the summer. The planters are changed seasonally.
CLINTON PANSY FESTIVAL
Door & Window Decoration Contest
One of the highlights of the Clinton Pansy Festival is the Door and Window Decorating Contest by the Hunterdon Hills Garden Club. Members of the Club judge the decorated doors, windows and planters/boxes, and ribbons are awarded. Winners are chosen based on color, creativity, harmony, eye appeal, plant compatibility and overall effect. Five (5) members serve as judges and present awards to the winners.
GARDEN THERAPY
Fresh Flowers to Shut-ins
Garden Therapy is an ongoing project which provides fresh flower arrangements to shut-ins through Meals-on-Wheels. Members of the committee meet at the Allerton United Methodist Church to accomplish this. Containers are decorated with appropriate holiday themes. This past year over 70 arrangements were made monthly by the committee for a ten (10) month period. About twelve (12) members meet each month to make these floral arrangements.
Holiday Project
Members of the HHGC make floral arrangements with the residents of a local nursing home for their dining room tables for the holiday.
WAY AND MEANS
Fall Bulb Sale
The Hunterdon Hills Garden Club will sell Fall and Christmas bulbs to members and their friends. This will be the fourth annual sale.
Garden Tour
The Hunterdon Hills Garden Club will host the annual Garden Tour in June. Previous Garden Tours were very successful. All members are required to participate either as host/hostesses or in some other capacity. This is a major annual fundraiser.
Cookbook
The HHGC will publish a cookbook in 2010
SCHOLARSHIPS
Each year scholarships are given to two (2) or more students from Hunterdon County who plan to pursue careers in horticulture, agriculture, conservation, or related fields. Applicants can apply both as high school seniors or as college students and the same student may receive a scholarship in subsequent years. The scholarships are awarded in person at our June meeting.
The scholarship Chairman and a committee of three (3) members review the applications and determine the recipients based on eligibility and need.
FLOWER DESIGN
This year the HHGC floral design committee is continuing work on the newer creative designs. Please remember to utilize the title of the assignment in your interpretation of the design. Give your imaginations free rein and remember to enjoy this learning experience. This year we will do an overview of the upcoming months so everyone will know what to expect ahead of time. Remember, you can always participate, even when it is not your month. Learning by doing is the quickest way to develop your “eye” and the practice builds confidence.
MEMBER PLANT EXCHANGE & GARDEN FLEA MARKET
At our April meetings, members bring garden-related items to trade and share, like a “flea market”. The member plant exchange occurs at our June meeting and is done rather informally. If you bring a plant you pick a number and have a chance to pick a different plant to take home when you number is called.
ARBOR DAY TREE PLANTING
Members select a site for a tree as well as a tree to plant for Arbor Day.
NEW PROJECTS
Members will learn about new designs in the Flower Show Handbook and through programs and workshops.
Members will further their knowledge of horticulture topics through programs and workshops.
Members will examine the feasibility of new garden therapy outreach programs.
CURRENT YEAR PROJECTS
We will familiarize ourselves with several outstanding gardens in our area with field trips to learn about their special plantings. The annual Mystery Tour will take place in May 2010.
