The New Jersey Invasive Species Strike Team (NJISST) is a statewide cooperative effort with a mission to prevent the spread of emerging invasive species across the state of New Jersey. Started in 2008 as the Central Jersey Invasive Species Strike Team, the project has now expanded statewide and consists of nearly 60 public and private partner organizations representing all levels of government from federal to municipal, non-profit conservation groups and consulting foresters. The Strike Team utilizes the method of Early Detection & Rapid Response to combat the onslaught of newly emerging invasive species before they can cause significant ecological damage to our forests. We all know the serious impacts created by Japanese Barberry, Multiflora Rose, Japanese Stiltgrass and approximately 30 other widespread invasive species threatening our forests. Through cooperative efforts, we can thwart the nearly 80 additional species that are beginning to emerge on our landscape. We encourage any public or private agency, organization, business, or individual to contact us about joining the NJISST partnership. Together, we can Nip Invasive Species in the Bud! | Garden Therapy at LYONS VA HOSPITAL IS IN NEED OF YOUR ASSISTANCE ![]() From 1944 to the present, GCNJ has provided Garden Therapy at Lyons VA Hospital. Fresh floral arrangements are constructed on site each Friday, every week throughout the year by a unique group of dedicated individuals: local volunteers, members of the local garden club and members of garden clubs from surrounding communities. The Garden Clubs of GCNJ have participated in making this a very meaningful and spirited endeavor, enjoyed by the Veterans and their families, medical staff, and visitors. It is essential that we continue this effort…but many participating clubs are feeling the rising costs of materials. As a result, their ability to finance this important project is in jeopardy. Won’t you please help by sending a financial contribution? Any amount…large or small…will be of great help! Checks should be made payable to GCNJ (note on memo line: Garden Therapy) and sent to Terry Blake, Garden Therapy Chairman ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Your club might be interested in Garden Therapy opportunities at the VA satellite outpatient clinic located in Brick. Access points are also located in Elizabeth, Fort Monmouth, Hackensack, Jersey City, Morristown, Newark, New Brunswick, Paterson, and Trenton.* *Source: http://www1.va.gov/directory/guide/facility.asp?ID=45&divisionId=ALL |

Gardening at the Shore The Garden Club of Long Beach Island has published a book about gardening titled, Gardening at the Shore. The book was the creation of a number of Garden Club members who felt strongly that our special island needed to be rescued from environmentally unsound gardening practices. With the current rate of construction, landscaping properties become an important issue. The book handles the many problems that affect the unique conditions of a barrier island. To guide the gardener through living with storms, wind, salt, sand, flooding, and drought, there are chapters that range from wind breaks to creating healthy soil, stressing sound practices that will not contribute to pollution of our beautiful waters. The book is illustrated with appropriate art work and stunning photography and concludes with a calendar of month-by-month gardening tasks. To order a copy of the book, send a check for $15.00 plus $5.00 (S&H) to: The Garden Club of LBI, P. O. Box 344, Ship Bottom, NJ 08008.
