Open to the Public: Civic Projects

Davies Arboretum Work Session Every Tuesday morning  March 15 - October 15 from 9 to 11 am. Club members and interested community volunteers meet to maintain and develop Davies Arboretum at 49 Anderson Avenue, Demarest. Learn all about how to select and grow the best low-maintenance flowering trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, and bulbs.
 
Historic Demarest Railroad Station Work Session (by appointment). Club members and interested community volunteers meet to maintain and develop the plantings beautifying the historic train station.

Open Only to Members and Invited Guests

Sept 2 1:00 Mini Flower Show  themed “Showcase Your Garden”
Exhibit at club’s regular September meeting any floral designs or labeled horticultural exhibits interpreting the theme.

“Heirloom Tomato Tasting and Luncheon”
Come enjoy a horticultural based luncheon where we taste and evaluate different locally grown heirloom tomato varieties.
Held at the Davies Arboretum. Rain location: United Methodist Church
Pre-registration necessary with fee.  $10 members, $12 non-members.
Oct 4   Garden Tour - Field Trip to Wave Hill Gardens, Bronx, NY
Visit the garden and see the hypertufa/cement troughs to get inspired for our November workshop. 
Club will carpool.
Oct 7 11:30 Meals on Wheels Workshop
Held before club’s regular October meeting.
Participants will make mini flower arrangements for food trays.
Materials will be supplied. Bring a bagged lunch, socialize, stay for meeting.
Oct 15   “Family Harvest Party”
Join us for an enjoyable afternoon and horticultural based luncheon with cooking contest where we judge and taste our own homemade fall harvest soups, pies and vegetable dishes.
Pre-registration and $5 fee.
Nov  4 11:30 Floral Arranging Workshop themed “Wreaths Across America”
Held before club’s regular November meeting.
Participants will make wreaths for decorating gravesites of local veterans in support of the project promoted by GCNJ. 
Materials will be supplied.  Bring a bagged lunch, socialize, stay for meeting.
Nov TBD   Field Trip to Fall Festival at Demarest Farm, Hillsdale, NJ
Date and details to be determined.  Club will carpool.

Horticulture Workshop “Making Hypertufa Planters”
Perfect for sedums, rock gardens, alpines or any miniatures.
A single day workshop held at the Davies Arboretum.
Bring your own chair and some simple tools.  Basic materials supplied.
Participants will have hands-on instruction.  Pre-registration and $5 fee.

 Feb TBD   Garden Tour – Field Trip to Planting Fields in Oyster Bay, Long Island
Tour the former Gold Coast estate Coe Hall, a 65 room Tudor Rival mansion with 409 acres of greenhouses and formal gardens.  We will see the largest camellia collection in the Northeast in full bloom at this time and other indoor horticultural displays. 
Club will carpool.
 Mar  2  11:30 Horticulture Workshop “Starting Seeds”
Held before club’s regular March meeting.
Come start mini greenhouses of seeds for veggies, perennials and annuals.
Participants will have hands-on instruction. 
Potting materials will be supplied.  Pre-register.  No Fee.
 Apr  13  11:30 Meals on Wheels Workshop
Held before club’s regular April meeting.
Participants will make mini flower arrangements for food trays.
Materials will be supplied. Bring a bagged lunch, socialize, stay for meeting.
